Product Labeling Guide

Create compliant, professional labels for your cottage food products

Why Product Labels Matter

Product labels serve multiple important purposes:

Legal Compliance

Required by Florida cottage food law to inform consumers and meet regulations

Consumer Safety

Alert customers to allergens and provide important product information

Branding

Professional labels build trust and make your products stand out

Marketing

Tell your story and connect with customers through your packaging

Required Label Elements

Every cottage food product label in Florida MUST include these six elements:

1. Product Name

Use the common or usual name of the food. Be clear and descriptive.

✅ Good Examples:

  • • "Chocolate Chip Cookies"
  • • "Strawberry Jam"
  • • "Sourdough Bread"
  • • "Salted Caramel Brownies"

❌ Avoid:

  • • Vague names like "Grandma's Special"
  • • Made-up words without clarification

2. Ingredient List

List ALL ingredients in descending order by weight (heaviest first). Include sub-ingredients for compound items.

Example for Chocolate Chip Cookies:

Ingredients: Enriched wheat flour (wheat flour, malted barley flour, niacin, iron, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), sugar, butter (cream, salt), semi-sweet chocolate chips (sugar, chocolate, cocoa butter, soy lecithin, vanilla extract), eggs, brown sugar, vanilla extract (vanilla bean extractives, water, alcohol), baking soda, salt.

3. Allergen Warnings

Clearly identify if your product contains any of the major food allergens:

Major Allergens (FDA):

• Milk
• Eggs
• Fish
• Shellfish
• Tree nuts
• Peanuts
• Wheat
• Soybeans

How to Display:

CONTAINS: Milk, Eggs, Wheat, Soy

or include in bold within ingredient list

4. Net Weight or Quantity

State the net weight or count. Include both metric and imperial for products over 1 lb.

Examples:

  • • "Net Wt. 8 oz (227g)" - for jams or spreads
  • • "12 cookies (approx. 10 oz)" - for baked goods
  • • "1 loaf - 16 oz (454g)" - for breads
  • • "Net Wt. 4 oz" - for items under 1 lb

5. Producer Name & Address

Include your business name (or your name) and the complete street address where the product was made.

Format:

Made by: Sweet Sarah's Bakery
123 Main Street
Orlando, FL 32801

Privacy Note: This is your home address for cottage food operations. Some makers use a PO Box for contact but must list the production address on the label.

6. Required Cottage Food Statement ⚠️

This is MANDATORY. Florida law requires this exact statement on every cottage food product:

"Made in a cottage food operation that is not subject to Florida's food safety regulations."

⚠️ Important: This statement must appear word-for-word. Do not modify or paraphrase it.

Label Design Tips

✨ Make It Readable

  • • Use at least 10-12pt font for main text
  • • Ensure good contrast (dark text on light background)
  • • Don't cram too much information - use appropriate label sizes

🎨 Brand Your Business

  • • Include your logo or business name prominently
  • • Use consistent colors and fonts across all products
  • • Add a tagline or brief story if space allows
  • • Consider including your website or social media handles

🖨️ Choose Quality Materials

  • • Use waterproof or oil-resistant labels for baked goods
  • • Consider clear labels for showing product inside
  • • Matte finish often looks more professional than glossy
  • • Test adhesive strength - labels should stay put but not damage packaging

📐 Standard Label Sizes

  • • 2" x 3" - Small jars, bags of cookies
  • • 3" x 4" - Medium jars, bread bags
  • • 4" x 6" - Large products, gift boxes
  • • 2" x 1" - Small stickers for supplementary info

Common Labeling Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Missing the cottage food statement

This is the #1 violation. Always include the required statement word-for-word.

❌ Incomplete ingredient lists

List ALL ingredients, including sub-ingredients. Don't forget salt, baking soda, etc.

❌ Missing allergen warnings

Clearly identify all major allergens. This is critical for consumer safety.

❌ Text too small to read

Required information must be legible. Use at least 10pt font.

❌ Making health claims

Avoid claims like "healthy," "lowers cholesterol," etc. without FDA approval.
